Humans are social animals who need to be around friends and loved ones. More than comforting us, others also help to identify when we are engaging in behaviors that are not only out of the ordinary but potentially self-destructive. After being prisoners to this virus and stuck in isolation for months, precisely at the time that we need our social support systems the most, many may have found that they have coped with pandemic stress in less than healthy ways, oftentimes without even knowing it. Some may also find that they are struggling to overcome anxiety and stress associated with the return to behaviors that were considered routine prior to the pandemic.
In this webinar, Dr. Samoon Ahmad will not only discuss the long-term impact that stress can have on one’s physical and mental well-being, but also provide some tools that individuals can use to evaluate their own level of well-being and improve their levels of wellness. This will include specific interventions that can reverse bad habits and help drive those who want to keep making positive changes to their lives in the wake of the pandemic.
Within the presentation, Dr. Ahmad will answer the following questions:
- How do you identify normal stress from pathological stress?
- How can you tell if new routines have adversely affected your mental health?
- What interventions can you make to interrupt these behaviors and cycles?
- What is wellness?
- How can wellness help keep you motivated and committed to making these positive changes?
Dr. Ahmad supervises and mentors trainees, writes on a broad range of subjects, and lectures nationally and internationally on various topics, with emphasis on the use of antipsychotics, obesity, and metabolic disorders. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association; an Associate member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, U.K; and is the President of NYU-Bellevue Psychiatric Society.
Dr. Ahmad developed Bellevue's Psychiatry Integrated Systems Conference, based on the morbidity and mortality conference in medicine, to better coordinate services and treatment at the institution. He was recognized for his 25 years of distinguished service at Bellevue and in 2014 was named Bellevue’s Physician of the Year in Psychiatry for his continued pursuit of clinical excellence, leadership, and dedication at the institution.
Dr. Ahmad specializes in the psychopharmacological treatment of psychotic, mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders, and his research focus has been primarily in metabolic disorders and medical comorbidities in the mentally ill. He was the principal investigator of an inpatient study about the association of psychiatric medications, diet, physical activity, and obesity in the chronically mentally ill. Additional research has focused on understanding the role of faith, religion and resilience in disasters. His documentary, “The Wrath of God: A Faith Based Survival Paradigm,” examined the aftermath of the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan, and was awarded “The Frank Ochberg Award for Media and Trauma” by the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
Dr. Ahmad is the founder of the Integrative Center for Wellness in New York City. He has consulted for numerous outside state and federal agencies, is a contributing and consulting editor to various textbooks, and lectures on a broad range of topics in general psychiatry.
